Recent reports say Russia deployed the guided-missile frigate Admiral Kasatonov near Fehmarn, a German island in the Baltic Sea.
According to multiple news outlets, the vessel is one of Russia’s newer Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates.
It is reportedly capable of carrying Kalibr cruise missiles and Zircon hypersonic missiles.
The ship was observed near Fehmarn, a strategically important area close to the Danish straits that connect the Baltic Sea to the North Sea.
Reports describe Admiral Kasatonov as one of the most modern warships in the Russian Navy,.
It was commissioned in 2020.
The deployment follows heightened tensions between Russia and NATO members, including disputes over sanctions and actions against Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”
Several reports noted that the vessel was observed with its location transponder switched off, making its movements more difficult to track.
Analysts cited in these reports view the deployment as a signal of military presence and deterrence, although there has been no public indication that the ship engaged in hostile action while near the German coast.
The deployment follows attacks and seizures of several Shadow fleet ships.
Putin is trying to make his presence felt and deter fire seizures of ships carrying sanctioned cargo.
According to the reports currently available, Russia has not issued an official explanation for why the frigate Admiral Kasatonov was deployed near the German island of Fehmarn.
President Vladimir Putin criticized Western seizures and inspections of Russia-linked vessels, calling them “piracy and robbery” and saying Russia would “respond in kind” where it considered necessary.
Putin also warned of countermeasures against actions targeting Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” of oil tankers and cargo vessels.
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, reportedly made separate threats concerning European merchant shipping.
No comment has been received from NATO.
