The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Board of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), charging members to ensure that every decision they make improves the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, Tegbe said the board’s appointment reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening governance and accountability in public institutions.
The event was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power, REA Board Chairman, Chief Ayodele Fayose, the Agency’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, board members, and senior ministry officials.
The minister described the REA as a key institution for expanding access to electricity and driving economic growth, noting that projects such as mini-grids, solar home systems, and the electrification of markets, schools, health centres and farms are investments in human capital and inclusive development.
He highlighted the Agency’s flagship initiatives, including the Energizing Education Programme, Energizing Economies Programme, Energizing Agriculture Programme and the Africa Mini-Grids Programme, saying they demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving electricity access across the country.
Tegbe noted that the board, constituted under Section 130 of the Electricity Act, assumes office at a critical period for the Agency.
He stressed the need for effective collaboration between the board and management, explaining that while the board is responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight, the management will continue to handle the Agency’s day-to-day operations.
He also commended Board Chairman Ayodele Fayose for his leadership experience as a former governor of Ekiti State and assured the board of the Ministry’s support in achieving its mandate.
According to the minister, electricity remains a vital tool for promoting inclusion, creating opportunities and boosting national prosperity.
Responding on behalf of the board, Fayose said President Tinubu’s appointment of Tegbe demonstrated the administration’s determination to address Nigeria’s long-standing power challenges.
He described the minister as a technocrat whose expertise and leadership have brought renewed direction to the power sector and pledged the board’s support in advancing the REA’s objectives.
