The Managing Director of TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited, Mathieu Bouyer, has reiterated the company’s dedication to enhancing Nigeria’s energy supply while simultaneously decreasing the carbon intensity of its operations.

Mr. Bouyer expressed these views during a panel discussion titled “Capitalising on Africa’s Global Upstream Momentum” at the 9th Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES 2026), which took place on Wednesday, February 4, in Abuja. During this event, industry leaders explored investment trends and opportunities within the continent’s oil and gas sector.

According to Mr. Bouyer, TotalEnergies’ strategy in Nigeria is founded on two primary pillars: increasing oil and gas production and expanding electricity generation through integrated power solutions, aligning with the Company’s global goal of providing more energy with reduced emissions.

“Our strategy focuses on the overall growth of energy,” Mr. Bouyer stated, emphasizing that Nigeria is a crucial market within TotalEnergies’ global portfolio and continues to vie with other nations for upstream investment capital. Mr. Bouyer elaborated that the company’s immediate focus is on maximizing value from its current assets, which include onshore gas and offshore oil and gas developments.

He pointed out the recently approved Ubeta Gas project, which aims to deliver up to 300 million cubic feet of gas per day, along with several other projects that are currently under assessment.

Regarding sustainability, Mr. Bouyer revealed that TotalEnergies has eradicated routine gas flaring across all its Nigerian operations since 2023, representing a significant achievement in its emissions reduction initiative.

He mentioned that the company has implemented advanced methane detection technologies, including its proprietary technology AUSEA, designed to monitor emissions in real time and facilitate prompt intervention.

In addition to the implementation of AUSEA, Mr. Bouyer noted that TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited has also installed 2,500 Permanent Emission Monitoring Systems (PEMPs) across all its production sites in Nigeria.

He additionally revealed intentions to establish a five megawatt solar power facility at OML 58, aimed at providing electricity to the Ubeta Gas Project, which he characterized as one of the initial near net zero gas developments globally.

Bouyer emphasized the significance of forming partnerships with Nigerian firms, stating that collaboration with local operators is essential for expediting project execution and generating value for the wider economy.
