NLC, TUC Call Off Strike, Demand Fixing Refineries, Others

The Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have agreed to suspend the planned nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

The strike was suspended after hours of talks between the government and labour unions. The government, led by Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, agreed to review the unions’ demands.

The requests include revising the minimum wage, implementing a cash transfer plan using the World Bank’s $800 million loan, restarting the compressed natural gas project for labour centers, and revitalising the languishing education sector.

Other requests include the rehabilitation of the country’s refineries, the repair of road and rail networks, and the evaluation of several taxes on enterprises, as proposed by the TUC.

The conference concluded around 10:40 p.m. on Monday.
