Leading Africa’s Energy Evolution: NERC Elected Chair of Electricity Sector at 22nd AFUR General Assembly
We are proud to announce a significant milestone for the Nigerian energy landscape and the continent at large. On Thursday, 26th March 2026, during the 22nd African Forum for Utility Regulators (AFUR) Annual General Assembly, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) was officially nominated and voted as the Chair of the Electricity Sector.

This election serves as a powerful endorsement of Nigeria’s leadership and long-standing contribution to utility regulation in Africa. As the new Sectoral Chair, NERC will sit on the AFUR Executive Committee for the 2026–2029 term, playing a pivotal role in shaping the regulatory work plan that will drive the continent’s energy future.
A Unified Vision for African Regulation
The 22nd General Assembly established a diverse and high-caliber Executive Committee representing all regions of the continent. NERC is honoured to serve alongside these distinguished leaders:
• Chairman: Electricity Control Board (ECB), Namibia (Southern Region).
• Vice Chairman: l’Autorité de Régulation du Secteur de l’Énergie (ARSE), Burkina Faso (West Region).
• Sectoral Chairs: Joining NERC in sectoral leadership are EWURA (Tanzania) for Water & Sanitation, ZERA (Zimbabwe) for Petroleum & Gas, and APN (Cameroon) for Transport.
The committee also includes dedicated members from Cameroon (ARSEL & ARMP), South Africa (NERSA), Zambia (ERB), Kenya (EPRA), Uganda (ERA), Niger (ARSE), Liberia (LERC), and Mauritania (ARE).
Why This Matters for NERC and Nigeria
Our appointment as Chair of the Electricity Sector is more than a title; it is a mandate to foster a robust, integrated, and sustainable power sector across Africa. Our focus for the next three years will include:
• Strategic Collaboration: Working with the Executive Committee to harmonize regulatory frameworks across regional borders.
• Knowledge Exchange: Leveraging NERC’s historical expertise to contribute to the collective success of AFUR.
• Continental Growth: Leading the “Energy – Electricity” agenda to ensure reliable and efficient utility services for all African citizens.
As noted by the AFUR Secretariat, NERC has been an active force in the forum for many years. We are eager to continue this legacy, working closely with Mr. Robert Kahimise (AFUR Chairman) and the entire Secretariat to advance the objectives of utility regulation on the continent.
Powering African Integration
This achievement is a testament to the dedication of the entire team at NERC, led by Dr. Musiliu Olalekan Oseni. We remain committed to excellence in regulation, ensuring that Nigeria continues to lead the charge toward a brighter, more energized Africa.
