Azura Power West Africa Sets Example for Efficient Power Generation, Says Adelabu

Amidst concerns over Nigeria’s electricity supply, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has hailed Azura Power West Africa as a role model for power plants in the country.

During a visit to the Azura power plant in Benin City, Adelabu commended its operational efficiency and highlighted its potential to address Nigeria’s power challenges.

Azura power plant currently operates at optimal capacity, contributing approximately 460 megawatts of electricity to the national grid daily. Adelabu expressed admiration for the plant’s performance, emphasizing its reliability and minimal downtime.

“I am more than impressed with the model they have deployed. It is a private sector power plant with three turbines installed, and all of them are operational, generating 430 megawatts,” stated Adelabu. He noted the absence of issues such as gas supply shortages, technical malfunctions, or operational disruptions, highlighting Azura’s exemplary operational standards.

Adelabu also lauded Azura’s expansion plans, which include the installation of three additional gas plants and steam plants. These expansions are projected to increase the plant’s installed capacity to about 1,500 megawatts, potentially resolving Nigeria’s power supply shortages.

“If that happens, the issue of shortage in power supply will be history,” remarked Adelabu, expressing optimism about Azura’s contribution to addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges.

The minister’s visit to Azura Power West Africa emphasises the federal government’s commitment to understanding and improving the country’s power generation capabilities.

Azura’s success serves as a testament to the potential for private sector participation in Nigeria’s energy sector and highlights the importance of operational excellence in achieving reliable electricity supply.
