The Federal Government (FG) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering reliable and stable electricity supply to Nigerians, announcing plans for strategic investments to strengthen the national grid and address recurring system collapses and voltage fluctuations.
Speaking on the initiative, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the Ministry is shifting from short-term interventions to a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s transmission infrastructure, describing grid stability as the foundation for sustainable power sector reforms.
“We cannot talk about gains in electricity generation or improvements in distribution if the national grid remains fragile.
“This administration is committed to building a stable and resilient grid—not as a slogan, but through a measurable, time-bound programme of action,” the Minister said.
As part of this commitment, the Ministry has constituted a Technical Working Committee on Grid Stabilization to lead the initiative.
The committee brings together technical, engineering, and regulatory expertise to address transmission bottlenecks, ageing infrastructure, and the persistent system disturbances that have affected electricity supply in recent years.
The committee will work closely with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to identify and prioritize critical intervention points across the transmission network.
Planned investments will focus on reinforcing key transmission corridors, expanding grid redundancy, upgrading transmission infrastructure, and modernizing grid control and monitoring systems to improve reliability and reduce the frequency and impact of outages.
The initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to restore public confidence in the power sector after years of service disruptions and unmet expectations.
Acknowledging the trust deficit, the Minister said the administration recognizes that its performance will be measured by tangible results rather than public assurances.
“Nigerians have heard promises before. We understand that confidence can only be earned through consistent delivery. We are not asking for blind faith; we are asking to be held accountable against clear milestones, and that is exactly what we intend to do,” he said.
The Ministry added that progress on the grid stabilization programme will be communicated regularly through a coordinated public engagement strategy involving key institutions across the power sector.
The approach is intended to ensure that citizens, investors, and other stakeholders receive timely, accurate, and consistent updates as implementation advances.
